Introduction to Video Game History
According to Merriam-Webster, a video game is defined as "an electronic game in which players control images on a video screen."
Today, video games are a highly popular pastime, with approximately half of Americans playing some form of video games [1], and over 1.2 billion people playing worldwide.[2] However, video games were not always as popular or as commonplace as they are today. Video games began in the 1950's as projects for computer scientists, and did not enter the home until the mid-1970's. This is a stark contrast to today's data, where an estimated 80% of American households own a video game system.[3]
Video games have come a long way since their beginning in the 1950's, and this website is here to take you on a tour through their journey.
